This Southern Black Racer Snake, Coluber constrictor priapus, is
common enough here in South Florida that I've seen several of them over
the years. The first one startled me, but once I looked them up to make
sure they were safe, I rather enjoyed having them around.
This one tolerated being played with my both of my children, and ok, me too. It
only took one nip at me after a good hour of excellent behavior, and it
pinched a bit, but didn't really hurt. I was picking it up again after
it had a bit of freedom in the lawn, so I'm sure it was quite desperate
to get away. I let it go.
I liked this picture because after standing bent over with the camera
facing the snake on the ground for quite a long while, I finally managed
to click while it was sticking its forked tongue out:
It's really neat to watch one slither across the lawn; they can lift
their head up above the grass and look around while they move, and they
move so very fast that they're usually gone before I can either grab the
camera or grab them. I'll try to catch another so I can add more photos,
but there are absolutely no guarantees that I'll be fast enough to.
