These hungry Red-winged Blackbird babies were at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands (April 08.) The parents flew in and feed them every few minutes. Mama bird is shades of brown; Papa bird is black with a red, orange and yellow spot on his wings.

The father bird clearly gives the Red-winged Blackbirds their name, although I think I see a touch of red on the wing of the female too.

As the babies got older, they began hopping up on the side of the nest trying to be the first to be fed:

During one feeding I was able to discern the dinner: a Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis). Fortunately, Harvey Singer got a better photo of a less beak-squashed Blue Dasher Dragonfly sitting on a Fire Flag plant and let me share it with you here. Thanks Harvey!

Soon the fledgling birds were out of the nest climbing about in the Fire Flag plant the nest was in.

... and then they were off to other plants, just little chirps in the distance. The parents were still feeding them, and somehow Evelyn spotted this one quite a distance from the empty nest:

That first nest was a bird watchers dream - right in sight.
