These scary looking black and brown bugs were so distracted with one
another that I was able to pick them up for pictures. I wasn't expecting
the bug to step up on my thumb, and I have to admit that even though I'd
come to the conclusion that they were moths
, and thus not going to sting
or bite, it was still rather scary. First impressions are harder to
overcome than I thought!
Now I've looked at an awful lot of bugs in my yard and elsewhere, but
were a first for me, so I visited the
Moth Photographers Group
to find out
more about them, which was a good idea because my first guess wasn't
very accurate. They turned out to be Grape Root Borer Moths, Vitacea

I'm rather sorry that I let these amazing moths go before getting more
pictures of them, but hindsight is, as usual, the most clear. Oh well...
perhaps we'll cross paths again. If so, I'll be sure to get better shots
of how very shaggy they look. These black and reddish brown
stripes and shaggy scales definitely fall into my personal category of most
interesting bugs to look at! Picking them up was sort of a Dune moment
regarding fear of bugs
, and I've picked up enough
that I thought I
was past that with most of them.
