I try to photograph creatures without disturbing them so you can see
where they live, and what they do there. I've even gotten a few shots of
these biting Deer Flies resting on various plants. I left them in place
after I took their picture. This one though, this one did what biting
flies do - it bit me - so I smacked it. They hurt when they bite, so I
have no intention of taking a 'bug biting me' picture the way I did with
These biting flies are not nearly as big as
, but they still pack quite an ouch when they bite. The
deerfly I'm holding was still wiggling. It was difficult to restrain
myself from squashing it dead when it bit me.
The deerfly above is snoozing on an
the rest of these flies are on
I have noticed that they tend to rest head down. I got brave and tipped the
branch sideways for this last shot.
I think they'll land on any plant to rest; these just happened to be the
plants I noticed them on and managed to sneak up for a picture before I
scared them off. Wow - who scared whom?
I usually look forward to more encounters with my bugs
, but this Deer
Fly is an exception. Deer Flies bite.
The bite hurts, swells, and itches, so I don't stick around to get many
pictures when I find these biting flies
, and I don't particularly want
to ever see another one.
